Snail Sculpture
A sculpted snail made from steel and hardwood, playful and grounded, a slow creature given weight and presence. The body is fabricated from folded and welded steel planes, angular and faceted, left raw to weather naturally and develop a living patina over time. The shell is carved from solid timber, shaped by hand, with growth rings, cracks, and grain fully exposed, making the timber’s age and history an integral part of the form.
The contrast between warm organic wood and industrial steel gives the sculpture a quiet tension, heavy yet humorous, robust yet gentle. The proportions are deliberately compact and approachable, inviting close inspection and touch rather than distance.
Designed for extreme versatility. The snail can be bolted directly to a concrete slab, a timber log, or a tree trunk. It can live in gardens, play spaces, landscapes, or public settings, sitting low to the ground or emerging from natural elements as a companionable sculptural presence. The plinth is not included but is available as an optional addition.
Specifications
• Approximate dimensions, 500 mm long x 300 mm wide x 400 mm high
• Materials, solid hardwood shell, mild steel body and fixings
• Finish, timber sealed for exterior use, steel left raw to rust naturally
• Installation, bolt down fixing suitable for concrete, timber, or tree mounting
Custom sizes, alternative timbers, and finish options available on enquiry.
Each sculpture is a unique artwork. Natural variation in timber grain, hand carving, steel patina, and finishing means the final piece will differ from the images shown, which are indicative rather than exact.
