ARTIST STATEMENT

Timber is never a neutral material. Every piece carries the record of its own growth, its environment and the passage of time. Rather than concealing that history, my practice seeks to reveal it.

Working almost exclusively with reclaimed Australian timber, I combine carving with processes such as burning, bleaching, brushing, distressing and oiling to expose the material's natural structure. Knots, scars, checking and weathering are not imperfections to be removed but evidence of a life already lived. Steel and brass are occasionally introduced, not as decoration, but as quiet counterpoints to the warmth and unpredictability of wood.

The sculptures occupy a space between the organic and the architectural. Their forms draw from seed pods, geological formations, weathered landscapes and vernacular artefacts without directly representing any one thing. They are intended to remain open, inviting personal interpretation rather than prescribing a narrative.

Underlying the work is an interest in universal human experience: impermanence, resilience, loss, renewal and our enduring relationship with the natural world. These themes are approached indirectly through material, form and surface rather than symbolism or illustration.

Whether encountered in a gallery, a landscape or an urban setting, the sculptures aim to slow attention and create moments of quiet reflection. They seek to reconnect contemporary environments with the depth, complexity and enduring presence of the natural material from which they are made.
